Sirope de Chocolate (Chocolate Syrup)

Quick and easy chocolate syrup. Perfect for pouring over ice cream and using in milkshakes or quick hot chocolate.

Chocolate Syrup
(for milkshakes, hot chocolate, or to serve with ice cream)

Time: less than 10 minutes
Makes about 2 cups syrups

Ingredients:
½ lb. (8 oz.) chocolate (bittersweet or dark)
1 cup water
1 cup white sugar
½ tsp. salt

Directions:
  • In a blender, mix together all ingredients.
  • Pour into a saucepan over high heat for 5 minutes, constantly mixing.
  • Allow to cool to room temperature, then store in a bottle.

Chocolate Milkshake: In a blender, mix together the chocolate syrup, cold milk, sugar, crushed ice, and chocolate ice cream (optional), all to your liking.

Hot Chocolate: Mix 1 or 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup into 1 cup hot milk. Add sugar, whipped cream, and/or marshmallows to your liking.

Can also be served as a topping over ice cream.

Notes & Comments:
  • In the original recipe, Nitza states to just mix the syrup side to side while over the heat. I followed her directions the first time, but it came out a little lumpy (the flavor was still amazing though). But the second time I tried, I gently whisked the syrup in the pot until completely smooth, which took a little bit more than 5 minutes. This time it came out much smoother.
  • I'd recommend storing in a squeeze bottle after it has cooled down.
  • Refrigerate the syrup when not in use.
